How to setup Flute Music Bot on Discord

Follow this setup flow to invite Flute, give it the right permissions, test voice playback, and avoid the most common first-run problems.

This guide is for Discord server owners, moderators, and music channel managers.

Step-by-step setup

Invite Flute to the right server

Open the invite link from the website, choose your Discord server, and keep bot plus application command scopes selected.

Approve voice and text permissions

Flute needs voice access for playback and text access for command responses. Do not remove embed permissions because many status cards use embeds.

Join voice before playing

Ask the requester to join a voice channel, then run fplay your-song from an allowed text channel.

Verify playback state

Use fqueue and fnowplaying to confirm the bot joined, selected a track, and created a queue entry.

Recommended Bot Permissions

  • Connect lets Flute join the selected voice channel.
  • Speak lets Flute send audio into voice.
  • Use Application Commands enables slash command support.
  • Read Messages and Send Messages support legacy prefix commands such as fplay.
  • Embed Links keeps help, queue, and status responses readable.

First-run Checklist

  • The bot appears online in the server member list.
  • The bot can join the same voice channel as the requester.
  • fhelp responds in your music text channel.
  • fplay responds within a few seconds.
  • fqueue shows at least one queued track after a test play.
  • No permission warning appears in the bot response.

Text channel setup

Create a dedicated music command channel if your server is busy. This keeps queue messages, vote prompts, and now-playing cards away from general chat while still letting members request tracks.

  • Allow Flute to read and send messages in the music channel.
  • Allow users who can request songs to use application commands there.
  • Keep moderation bots from deleting command responses unless they are configured to ignore Flute.

Voice channel setup

If your server uses private or role-locked voice rooms, give the Flute role access to the channels where music is expected. Channel-specific denies override role permissions, so check channel permissions when the bot cannot join.

  • Allow Connect and Speak in the music voice channel.
  • Check user limits if the bot cannot join a full channel.
  • Keep the bot role high enough to avoid accidental permission blocks.

Recommended test after setup

Test Expected result
fhelp Flute sends the help menu with command categories.
fplay artist title Flute joins voice and starts playback or adds the result to queue.
fvolume 70 The output level changes without disconnecting the bot.
fqueue The current track and queue order are visible.
fstop Playback stops and the test queue is cleared.

If playback fails on setup

Check voice channel access and text command permissions first. Most first-time setup issues are caused by channel overrides, missing application command permission, or the requester not being in voice.

Retry with a simple query such as fplay test song. If that works, the original search term or source link was the problem. If it fails, open the troubleshooting page and compare the error with the recovery checklist.
